Legacy of Cancer in Iraq

The town of Fallujah

This article revealed one of the many devastating aspects of the aftermath following years of conflict in Iraq.

It’s particularly shocking as the images are of children suffering from extreme birth defects that have been linked to the chemical warfare inflicted by US-led military forces.

The incidents of these defects are suspected to be underreported and difficult to attain so it’s predicted that the true figures are closer to double.

Doctor Samira Alani who is the only professional reporting such cases in the town of Falluja stated the following disturbing observation;

“There are not even medical terms to describe some of these conditions because we’ve never seen them until now.”

Have any lessons been learnt from the likes of Hiroshima?

The ramifications from these wars are felt for decades and for generations to come. Not only is Iraq as a nation having to cope with the economic and political implications of war but ongoing severe health issues will plague the futures and wellbeing of countless individuals.  The extent to which such a war can impact a people has yet to be realised, I doubt it can really be measured at all.
